Growing in Loving Discernment
Paul prays that our love grows deeper and wiser, enabling us to recognize what is truly excellent and live sincerely without causing offense.

“This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ;”
Reflection
In Philippians 1:9-10, Paul’s prayer emphasizes a love that is more than feeling—it is love enriched with knowledge and discernment. This kind of love helps us see beyond superficial actions and intentions to what truly honors God and blesses others. Loving with discernment means choosing what is excellent, sincere, and free from offense. As we grow in this way, our lives reflect the character of Christ more clearly, preparing us to stand blameless at His coming. This growth involves continuous learning, humility, and practicing sincere love guided by wisdom rather than impulse or appearances. It is not always easy to balance love with truth and wisdom, but by inviting God to deepen our understanding, we can love well and live authentically in anticipation of Christ’s return.
Put it into practice
Reflect on one way your love can become more discerning today—perhaps by listening more carefully or seeking truth before reacting—and ask God to help you love sincerely without offense.
A prayer for today
Lord, deepen my love with wisdom and discernment. Help me choose what is excellent and live sincerely before You and others. May my love be genuine and free from offense as I await the day of Christ. Amen.
